Public Safety Minister Toews and Justice Minister Nicholson Provide Statement on Child Pornography Arrests

ID: 110693

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 02/02/12 -- The Minister of Public Safety, Vic Toews and the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Rob Nicholson, today commended members of a joint police operation that successfully arrested 60 individuals in connection to a child pornography investigation.

"I congratulate those members of the Provincial Strategy to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation on the Internet team, which successfully tracked down and arrested individuals suspected of having committed a series of heinous crimes against one of the most vulnerable groups in our society - our children and youth. The coordinated efforts of multiple levels of law enforcement across Ontario, led by the Ontario Provincial Police, underscored a strong commitment to stop individuals involved in this despicable activity.

As Canadians, we expect to be able to keep our children and all vulnerable groups safe from this type of crime," said Minister Toews.

Minister Nicholson added: "Our government has been clear: those who possess, distribute or produce child pornography are committing horrific crimes and should be punished to the full extent of the law. Just a few months ago, our government passed legislation requiring internet service providers to report tips to the Canadian Centre for Child Protection about websites that make child pornography available to the public. It also requires ISPs to notify police and safeguard evidence. A mandatory reporting regime is providing police with the tools they need to protect children from this heinous crime."
