Berlin / Teltow. In recent years both doctors and patients have increasingly
focused on the use of chondrocyte transplants for the treatment of articular
cartilage defects. After all, the regenerative method is an effective and gentle
form of treatment. On 9 March some 120 physicians from Germany and abroad met in
Berlin to discuss the latest developments, current methods and their experiences
of regenerative articular surgery. The symposium was chaired by Professor Mats
Brittberg (Gothenburg University, Sweden), the founder of autologous chondrocyte
transplantation, and Professor Matthias Steinwachs from the renowned Schulthess
Klinik in Zurich, Switzerland, one of the surgeons with the greatest experience
of chondrocyte transplantation.
Teltow-based co.don AG was one of the main sponsors of this expert group
meeting. "Preserving joints with the help of the body's own cells is frequently
possible much more often than doctors and patients think. With innovative
treatment methods it is vital that medical practitioners and scientists maintain
a permanent process of dialogue, which is why co.don AG is acting as the main
sponsor of this cartilage symposium", said Dr. Andreas Baltrusch, CEO of co.don
AG.
Under the scientific direction of Dr. med. Thilo John (DRK Clinic Westend) and
Dr. med. Volker Laute (Joint and Spinal Centre Steglitz), the experts discussed
cartilage surgery in a total of 16 seminars. "The Berlin Cartilage Symposium is
addressed both at colleagues who already have some experience of the topic and
those who want to get an overview of the latest cartilage therapy," explained
Dr. John. "The range of subjects stretches from the biological fundamentals of
articular cartilage via the surgical operation and post-op care through to the
financing of cell transplantations," added Dr. Laute.
In regenerative cartilage medicine the first step is to remove healthy cartilage
cells from the patient in minimally invasive surgery. These cells are then
propagated in special laboratories. The autologous cells are then inserted into
the defect, which regenerates the damaged cartilage and restores its shock-
absorbing properties. If treated early there is a very good chance of recovering
the painless joint mobility that existed previously. One of the leading European
providers of cultured chondrocyte transplants is co.don AG. The
biopharmaceutical company's method has already been used to treat more than
4,000 patients. Since 2007 the costs of treatment have been covered by statutory
German health insurance.
