Clarification in response to Finnish media stories on our application to the Environment Protection Agency

ID: 125298

(Thomson Reuters ONE) -

In response to information that has appeared in Finnish media, Nordic Mines
wishes to make the following clarification: Nordic Mines has applied to the
Environment Protection Agency (in Finland) for a licence to release rainwater
via the temporary outlet that was used during the development period. Analyses
of the water that have been performed do not indicate harmful levels of any
substances.

The environment licence Nordic Mines has been granted for the construction and
operation of the Laiva mine in Brahestad includes the construction of a dam for
collecting rainwater. This dam is used as a source of processing water for the
enrichment works. Surplus water from the open cast mine and from the sand
thickener are pumped back to the dam. The environment licence also specifies
that a pipe be laid to the sea in 2012 through which surplus water will be
released.

The background to this new application is the above normal precipitation over
the past year which has meant the water level in the dam today is higher than
planned. If precipitation were to be higher than normal over the next six
months, the level could rise above the flood control capacity of the dam.

To avoid this, on 10 March Nordic Mines applied to the Environment Protection
Agency for a licence to release rainwater via the temporary outlet that was used
during the development period.
