TOMRA celebrates 40 year anniversary
(Thomson Reuters ONE) -
On 1 April, 2012 it will be 40 years since TOMRA was founded by the brothers
Tore and Petter Planke. During four decades with constant innovation, TOMRA has
developed into a leading global provider of sensor-based sorting solutions,
active in more than 50 markets.
40 years ago, the invention of the world's first reverse vending machine led to
the establishment of TOMRA by the Planke brothers in Asker, Norway. Since then,
TOMRA has experienced rapid growth driven by a combination of organic
initiatives and acquisitions. The sum of all these developments has shaped a
company that operates in the full value chain of collection and sorting of
materials.
World leader in sensor-based sorting solutions
Today, TOMRA is the world leader in the field of reverse vending of used
beverage containers, with an installed base of more than 67,000 machines across
more than 30 markets worldwide. TOMRA is also the world's largest manufacturer
of vertical balers, and an industry leader in compaction and baling solutions.
The company is the pioneer and world leader in the automation of waste sorting,
the leading provider of sensor-based sorting systems for the mining industry and
for the fresh and processed food industries.
Well positioned for the next 40 years
"Through rapid growth, global expansion and continuous innovation, we have
reached many milestones since 1972", says Stefan Ranstrand, President and CEO of
TOMRA Group. "We celebrate our first 40 years in a world where global resources
are under unprecedented pressure. Resource productivity must increase to ensure
sustainable development for the next generations. In the next 40 years, 30% more
people will need to be fed with, at best, today's availability of farmland. We
need to rethink how we obtain, use, reuse and optimize the world's resources.
With our solutions for optimal resource productivity, TOMRA is well positioned
to evolve and transform what it means to be resourceful in the next 40 years to
come."
