Minister Steven Blaney Marks Anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 05/04/12 -- The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, issued the following statement today regarding the 67th anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands.

"Sixty-seven years ago, with the Liberation of the Netherlands, an everlasting relationship was formed between Canada and the Netherlands.

Canadian troops played a vital role in liberating the people of the Netherlands, bringing peace and freedom to this country. These brave individuals were among more than one million men and women who served in Canada's armed forces during the Second World War.

The Liberation of the Netherlands was a significant event that helped lead to victory in Europe and the end of the Second World War. In all, more than 7,600 Canadians were killed in their efforts to liberate the country; a tremendous sacrifice in the cause of peace and freedom.

Over these past 67 years, our losses have helped to bind Canada and the Netherlands as one, two countries who cherished freedom. The friendship between us is strong and lasting.

As we mark the anniversary today, we keep faith by remembering. We keep faith through lasting bonds between two great countries. We keep faith by sharing our story with those who will inherit the future. We will remember them. Lest we forget."
