Minister MacKay and General Walt Natynczyk Host the Pakistani Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 05/04/12 -- The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, and the Chief of the Defence Staff, General Walt Natynczyk, host Pakistan's Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, General Khalid Shameem Wynne, as part of on-going dialogue on bilateral, regional, and global defence issues.
"Canada and Pakistan enjoy a defence relationship that is constantly evolving," said Minister MacKay. "Through visits such as these, we are not only able to share our defence cultures, but we are also able to discuss challenges facing the international security environment and Southeast Asia region."
During this visit to Canada, General Wynne participated in CANSEC 2012, met with a number of defence representatives, toured various national sites of interest, observed a military training exercise and addressed groups currently studying at the Canadian Forces College in Toronto.
"It was an honour to welcome General and Mrs Wynne on their first visit to Canada. We were pleased to host them in Ottawa, Gagetown and Toronto. General Wynne expressed his sincere appreciation for the sacrifices and the contributions of our men and women to the stability of Afghanistan and to the region," said General Natynczyk. "Canada and Pakistan have a rich, shared history and tradition-from our service in World War I and II through to UN peacekeeping operations. This visit has enhanced our mutual understanding of current global and regional events, and further deepened our relationship."
This visit was the first time that Minister MacKay has met with General Wynne. Generals Natynczyk and Wynne have met previously on several separate occasions, once while General Natynczyk was conducting a Chief of Defence Visit to Pakistan (2009), and twice during Pacific Region Chiefs of Defence Conferences in Seoul (2010) and Hawaii (2011).
Canada and Pakistan both continue to work to enhance regional security in Southeast Asia.
