Deployment
North American service provider expands service network with stimulus dollars
Oakland, CA - May 15, 2012 - Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE), a global
leader in FTTx network access solutions, today announced a new MXK(TM)
deployment with Norvado, an advanced telecommunications provider serving
business and residential customers in northwest Wisconsin. Together, the
companies have built an FTTx GPON network to support fast delivery of affordable
and reliable high-speed Internet access, VoIP and video services. This
deployment will cover thirty percent of Norvado's customer base in the following
rural counties; Bayfield, Douglas,Ashland and Sawyer.
Since the inception of its relationship with Zhone in 2008, Norvado's
subscribers have benefited from the broadband investment in Zhone solutions. As
connectivity demands increase from businesses and residences, the unmatched
flexibility and scalability of the Zhone MXK platform is sought after by service
providers across the globe. Zhone's ability to provide GPON connectivity in
facilitating network and service upgrades to FTTH has been repeatedly
demonstrated in similar stimulus projects throughout the United States;
representative customers include Myakka Communications, Hardy
Telecommunications, Shawnee Telephone and Yadkin Valley Telephone.
The broadband stimulus has been a challenge for many service providers that want
to expand their service network, including Norvado, due to the regulation
process and timeline struggles. Zhone has deployed stimulus-funded networks to
customers including Norvado and others, and will continue to do so. The Federal
Communications Commission recently announced the start of the 2012 Measuring
Broadband America process, signaling its ongoing investment in the program,
which translated into confirmation that Zhone and its broadband stimulus
customers are collectively headed in the right direction with these types of
deployments.

year period from January 2009 to January 2012. Total subscriber capacity
supported by these deployments now exceeds 20 million. Featuring industry-
leading density, scalability and switching capacity, the MXK is the industry's
first terabit access concentrator and provides non-blocking capacity of up to
3,600 100 Mbps GPON subscribers or 360 1G Active Ethernet subscribers. Zhone has
