(Thomson Reuters ONE) -
Tieto Corporation PRESS RELEASE 16 May 2012 at 9.00 am EET
A new ticketing and information system will be taken into use in the Helsinki
region public transport by the end of 2015. It will modernize the current travel
card system and standardize the information systems. The aim is to bring the
entire Helsinki region public transport within the scope of up-to-date passenger
information.
Tieto and Helsinki Region Transport Authority signed an agreement concerning the
delivery of a new system today. The agreement covers the implementation of a
ticketing and information system, as well as maintenance for five years. The
project's investment costs are approximately EUR 60 million and the usage costs
for five years approximately EUR 30 million.
The new ticketing and information system is based on open, service-centered
architecture. It will enable the continuous development of the system, the
increasing of services, as well as keeping the system up-to-date in a flexible
and cost-efficient manner. Helsinki Regional Transport was one of the first in
the world to implement the current travel ticket system based on non-contact
cards and with the new project, will continue as a pioneer of public transport
systems together with Tieto.
"When the modernization of the ticketing and information systems is implemented
concurrently, we get a service package in which the systems can utilize shared
basic databases, the same components of the vehicle system, as well as the data
generated by each other. In this way, we can construct a better service package,
as well as achieving savings in both investments and usage costs", says Helsinki
Region Transport, Executive Director, Suvi Rihtniemi.
"Intelligent transport is seen at Tieto as a significant part of the development
of information society. This is a significant agreement for Tieto, because we
want to be involved in developing new services for public transport. Together
with Helsinki Region Transport, we are on the front line developing the new
generation ticketing and information system", says Ari Järvelä, Executive Vice
President, Finland and the Baltic countries, Tieto.
The modernization of the systems will make the use of public transport even
easier. The planning of a journey becomes easier with the availability of even
more extensive real-time information and network services. Stop screens to be
installed in all the buses will also help to manage the route. Information on
exceptional situations can also be improved thanks to the satellite navigation.
