£10 million investment to drive growth for Atlantis Healthcare

Atlantis Healthcare is looking to expand further into Europe on the back of a
£10 million investment by international investment company White Cloud Capital.
Atlantis, which currently manages some 45 patient programmes in nine countries,
has been rapidly building a reputation as a market leader in developing and
managing programmes to ensure patients adhere to their prescribed course of
treatment.
A 2003 World Health Organisation report described poor patient adherence to
treatment regimes as the primary cause of failure to achieve the full health
benefits medicines can provide, and a major impairment to the ability of health
care systems around the world to achieve population health goals and manage
healthcare costs. Last year, a New England Healthcare Institute report estimated
non-adherence cost the United States healthcare system alone US$290 billion per
year.
Atlantis's UK General Manager Kate Reid says the importance of adherence
continues to grow as chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease
assume an ever larger proportion of the overall healthcare burden.
"Our initiatives match the increasing emphasis being placed on actual patient
outcomes as a basis for healthcare funding, as opposed to the traditional model
of funding according to patient numbers.
"Across Europe and the UK, governments are looking to ensure the treatments they
fund can be guaranteed to improve population health in a cost-effective way.
That means developing innovative ways of working - especially in the primary
care pathways - and that's exactly what we are doing," says Reid.
For example, Reid says, Atlantis is presently in preliminary talks with a Middle
East government on initiatives to combat that country's increasing incidence of
diabetes.
Reid says the partnership with White Cloud Capital will allow Atlantis to grow
internationally, particularly in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, broaden its
service offering, and expand its research and development capabilities.
Atlantis' unique combination of the latest thinking in health psychology and its
expertise in marketing and communication strategies gives the company a
significant competitive advantage. In the University of London's Professor John
Weinman, Atlantis's Head of Health Psychology in Europe, and Head of Health
Psychology Professor Keith Petrie, the company has two of the world's leading
thinkers on Health Psychology to complement its expertise in research,
communication, and customer understanding.
Reid says that "it's that mix that allows Atlantis to design programmes that
address the needs of the individual patient.
"Changing patient behaviour is above all a matter of understanding each
individual's barriers to change, and developing a solution accordingly. There is
no one-size fits all strategy.
"Traditional healthcare models are built around treating acute conditions, and
are often not equipped to give patients with chronic illnesses the support they
need to effectively self-manage their treatment," she says.
"Essentially, we are looking to fill the gap that exists between the
pharmaceutical industry, healthcare providers and funders, and patients, in a
way that ensures the optimum outcome for all parties."
White Cloud Capital founding partner Nicholas Watkins says Atlantis is bringing
fresh thinking to a crucial issue facing countries around the world: how to
improve population health outcomes in an economically viable way.
