SKW Metallurgie Group inaugurates Bhutanese plant for calcium silicon
* Vertical integration secures raw material supply for global cored wire
production
* High cost efficiency leads to EBITDA increase from 2012 onwards

Unterneukirchen (Germany), March 4, 2011. The specialty chemical Group SKW
Metallurgie, quoted in the German SDAX index, inaugurated, as scheduled,
its new calcium silicon plan in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan. In
attendance of high-ranking representatives of Bhutanese economy and
politics, as well as of the SKW Metallurgie Group, the centerpiece of the
plant (a calcium silicon furnace) was formally inaugurated. By this step,
the SKW Metallurgie Group significantly expands its global activities in
secondary metallurgy along the value chain.
With respect to its global Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for the
environment, mankind, and society, the SKW Metallurgie Group consequently
applies to its new plant in Bhutan, Western environmental and safety
standards. In addition, the electricity used in the calcium silicon
production is derived exclusively from regenerative energy sources
(hydropower).
'Our new plant in Bhutan secures a long-term and competitive raw material
supply for our calcium silicon-based global activities in secondary
metallurgy. It is of particular significance to apply, also and in
particular in Bhutan, without any exception Western environmental and
safety standards', said SKW Metallurgie's CEO, Ines Kolmsee.
High earnings contribution expected from 2012 onwards
The Bhutanese Group company SKW-Tashi Metals&Alloys Private Ltd. (founded
in 2008) will in the first instance secure Group-internal raw material
supply by providing calcium silicon from the new plant in Bhutan to the
global cored wire production sites of the SKW Metallurgie Group, and by
thereby partially replacing raw material that had theretofore been
purchased externally. In addition, cored wire will be produced in Bhutan in
the medium term, in particular to explore additional sales potential for
the SKW Metallurgie Group in India.
First positive earnings contributions are expected in the second half of
2011 due to the usual ramp up situations. For business year 2012, the SKW
Metallurgie Group expects a significant contribution from the new plant to
corporate earnings.
The new production site is situated in Bhutanese Pasakha right adjacent to
the Indian frontier, and employs approximately 150 staff members.
The SKW Metallurgie Group intends to give guidance for current business
year 2011 during its Year-End Press Conference in Muenchen (Germany) on
March 24, 2011. That guidance will also take the new activities in Bhutan
into consideration.
