Neste Oil's renewable diesel to be trialed by a fleet of road tanker trucks
Neste Oil's NExBTL renewable diesel is to be trialed in day-to-day use in
Finland by a fleet of road tanker trucks from the beginning of June onwards. The
trial will last around a year and will involve 23 vehicles in Neste Oil livery
operated by seven different companies. The vehicles will fill up with 100%
NExBTL renewable diesel at the Neste Oil Truck station at the distribution
terminal adjacent to the company's Porvoo refinery. The trial will monitor how
NExBTL performs in trucks covering long distances and carrying heavy loads under
a variety of climatic conditions.
"Fuel quality is a key issue for truck and bus companies, and the aim of the new
trial is to further confirm the suitability of NExBTL renewable diesel for use
in the tough and challenging conditions these companies encounter," says Kaisa
Hietala, Neste Oil's Vice President, Marketing, Renewable Fuels.
"Good logistics play a central role in keeping society running efficiently today
and will continue to do so in the future - and road transport needs technologies
and solutions that can help reduce its impact on the environment," continues
Kaisa Hietala.
Neste Oil's NExBTL renewable diesel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by at least
50% over the product's entire life cycle compared to fossil diesel. Its use also
reduces local emissions significantly and helps improve urban air quality.
NExBTL renewable diesel is a sulfur-free, oxygen-free, nitrogen-free, and
odorless fuel compatible with all current diesel engines. Developed in
collaboration with leading automotive manufacturers, it meets the toughest
quality and environmental standards and its technical properties exceed those of
both conventional biodiesel and fossil diesel.
Neste Oil has previously trialed NExBTL renewable diesel extensively under field
conditions in public transport buses in Greater Helsinki, with excellent
results. A fleet of 14 standard Mercedes-Benz trucks and buses in Germany have
used 100% NExBTL since mid-2008 and have driven over 1 million kilometers to
date. Other trials have also been carried out in Canada and Germany. NExBTL
renewable diesel is currently used in buses in Greater Helsinki and by a number
of oil companies. Neste Green diesel, containing a minimum of 10% NExBTL
renewable diesel, has been available to Finnish drivers since 2008.

NExBTL renewable diesel in brief
Based on Neste Oil's proprietary technology, premium-quality NExBTL renewable
diesel is the most advanced diesel fuel on the market today. It easily
outperforms both conventional biodiesel and fossil diesel, and can be produced
from a flexible mix of vegetable oils and waste animal fat sourced from the food
industry. Neste Oil's procurement chain ensures that all the raw materials it
uses for NExBTL are produced responsibly. NExBTL renewable diesel has been shown
to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 50% over the product's entire life
cycle when compared to fossil diesel. Its lower tailpipe emissions also make a
valuable contribution to enhancing overall air quality.
Unlike conventional biodiesels, hydrotreated vegetable oils, such as NExBTL
renewable diesel, meet even the most stringent requirements set by automotive
manufacturers. It offers excellent performance at low temperatures and can be
used even in aviation. NExBTL diesel is suitable for all modern diesel engines
without any modification as such or blended with fossil diesel. It is also fully
compatible with existing distribution and logistical systems and requires no
additional investments in this area.
