(Thomson Reuters ONE) -
Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and Telenor Group President and CEO
Jon Fredrik Baksaas visited THOR 7-supplier Norspace in Horten on Wednesday. A
satisfied Prime Minister saw the result of local value creation based on global
contracts to supply equipment to Telenor's next satellite.
"I am impressed, and quite proud, that we have an environment in Horten
supplying high-technology equipment throughout the world and far into space. And
I am impressed and fascinated that we have companies like Telenor who is a major
player in space, and that their activities create synergies, said the Norwegian
prime minister," Jens Stoltenberg.

Space System/Loral in Palo Alto, California USA, will be the manufactorer of
THOR 7. The planning starts this autumn. The construction of the satellite as
such will start next autumn, in 2012. THOR 7 will be launched by ArianeSpace
from French Guyana at the end of 2013. THOR 7 will be positioned 35,786 km out
in space, and have an investment of 1.6 billion NOK.
"During the last five year period, Telenor has invested 4 billion NOK in new and
more modern satellites. There is a strong growth in the satellite communications
market. Governments use satellites for things like environment monitoring.
Private companies need more capacity for HDTV and 3D, broadband and maritime
services. Our new satellite THOR 7 will serve TV, shipping, oil industry and
broadband needs in Europe and Middle East," said Jon Fredrik Baksaas.
Norspace delivers receivers and transmitters (Telemetry Tracking Command-
equipment) that gives Telenor Satellite Broadcasting (TSBc) the opportunity to
communicate with THOR 7 from the communications centre at Fornebu in a safe and
proper way. Norspace is renowned for its world leading position in Surface
Acoustic Wave (SAW) technology for satellites.
"Together with Space System/Loral we have concluded that Norspace have the best
products for Telemetry, Tracking and Control (TTC). Telenor is an international
player that uses international tenders for their purchases. When we spend
billions, we need to be sure that we acquire the best. Everything on the
satellite must keep its functionality for its entire lifetime," said Telenor
Group President and CEO Jon Fredrik Baksaas.
Norspace is located in Horten, Norway, a town with 26,000 residents, an hour's
drive from Fornebu and the Telenor Headquarter. Norspace is the only Norwegian
supplier to THOR 7. The contract secures jobs in Horten and positions the
Norwegian space industry in a demanding market.
"The THOR 7-contract gives us credit and is important for us. It will have
effects for Norspace. The value of the THOR 7-contract is multiplied for our
company," said Norspace CEO Sverre Bisgaard.
Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said at the visit that many Norwegian counties
envy Horten their high-tech companies, which Norspace is a major part of.
Telenor's new satellite will be equipped with both Ku- and Ka-band (datacom)
capacities for the provision of broadcasting services and data communications.
The satellite will be positioned at 1 degree West, where TSBc's recent
replacement and expansion satellites, THOR 5 and THOR 6 are already stationed.
