(Thomson Reuters ONE) - Wärtsilä Corporation, Trade & Technical Press release, 25 September2009Wärtsilä has been assigned overall responsibility for systemsintegration in the pioneering FellowSHIP project. Wärtsilä'sspecially designed equipment is being used to integrate and createsynergies between leading marine technology and state-of-the-art fuelcell technology. The equipment has been installed onboard theplatform supply vessel 'Viking Lady' for extensive sea tests. Theinnovative solution is seen as being an important contributor in thedevelopment of environmentally sustainable marine propulsion systems. The FellowSHIP project is a joint industry research and developmentproject managed by Det Norske Veritas. It aims to develop anddemonstrate hybrid fuel cell power packs, especially suited formarine and offshore use. The power pack will be used as anauxililiary power source on the 'Viking Lady', which is owned byEidesvik Offshore, Norway. The ship has been designed by WärtsiläShip Design, and its main engines and power drives have also beensupplied by Wärtsilä. Wärtsilä's electrical & automation businessunit in Norway has custom developed the power electronics needed toconnect the fuel cell to the ship's electrical network, and Wärtsilähas, therefore, the important role of being the systems integratorfor the FellowSHIP project.Wärtsilä's electro & automation business unit specializes indesigning and developing technologies related to electricaldistribution, controls and power converter applications."For the FellowSHIP project, Wärtsilä has developed the powerelectronics, and the systems for regulating and distributing energyfrom the fuel cell to the electrical network. We have also deliveredthe distribution and control systems," says Ingve Sørfonn, ProjectManager and Director R&D, Wärtsilä Ship Power Technology. In May, the 320 kW fuel cell, produced by MTU Onsite Energy GmbH, amember of the German Tognum Group, arrived at Stord in Norway. Hereit has been integrated together with Wärtsilä's technology, andtested. During this land testing all operational modes, shut downconditions, and dynamical behaviour have been tested and verified inaccordance with the specifications. The fuel cell technology is designed to increase efficiency and leadsto a considerable reduction in emissions. Fuel cell technology ofthis power size has never before been installed in merchant vessels, and the highly innovative project is unique on a world scale.Wärtsilä has been involved in fuel cell technology since themid-1990s and specializes in systems integration."Developing better and more environmentally friendly technologies forthe marine industry and offshore market is a very important focusarea for Wärtsilä. Wärtsilä invests heavily in research anddevelopment aimed at reducing emissions and improvingfuel-efficiency. Being the systems integrator on what mightpotentially be the world's most environmentally friendly ship, isvery exciting for us," says Sørfonn. "The vision for the FellowSHIPproject is to develop a technology that makes a positive contributionto the environment, and which can be used in marine constructions. Wehave great expectations for the tests that will now be carried out atsea."The partners in the FellowSHIP project include Wärtsilä, Eidesvik,Det Norske Veritas and MTU Onsite Energy GmbH. The project issupported by the Norwegian Research Council, Innovation Norway, andthe German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.Link to a picture can be found at the end of this release.Caption: The Viking Lady has been designed by Wärtsilä and isequipped with a complete, integrated Wärtsilä propulsion and powerelectronics system.
