Government of Canada Recognizes National Child Day and Highlights Investments in Families
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/18/11 -- On November 20 of each year, Canadians celebrate National Child Day. The day commemorates Canada's ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child that spells out the basic human rights to which children under the age of 18 are entitled.
"Our government recognizes the importance of ensuring that children reach their full potential. For that reason, we are delivering over $19 billion in supports for children and their families this year," said the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.
In 2011-2012, the federal government is providing over $6 billion in support of early childhood development programs and child care through transfers to the provinces and territories. This is the largest investment of its kind in the history of Canada.
The Universal Child Care Benefit annually offers over $2.6 billion to 1.5 million Canadian families who are caring for more than 2 million young children. This initiative alone has lifted 24 000 families, with 55 000 children, out of low income levels. Additionally, families in the two lowest personal income tax brackets can now earn more income before paying taxes and child poverty rates have been cut almost in half since 1996.
In Budget 2007, the Government of Canada introduced the Child Tax Credit, which provides tax relief for each individual under the age of 18. Together with other tax measures, this leaves families with more disposable income. The average family of four will now save over $3,000 per year in taxes.
The Government of Canada values the important contribution that families make to the country's well-being by caring for and raising children.
