Government of Canada Supports Drug Abuse Prevention for Northern and Prairie Vulnerable Youth

Shelly Glover, Member of Parliament for Saint Boniface, on behalf of the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, announced today Government of Canada funding under the National Anti-Drug Strategy for a project that will help prevent youth living in various Northern and Prairie communities from taking illicit drugs.
"The Government of Canada is proud to be working with the Council on Drug Abuse to help prevent illicit drug use among Aboriginal and vulnerable youth in our Northern and Prairie regions," said MP Glover. "This prevention program helps youth make healthy decisions through a better understanding of the harmful effects of drug abuse."
The project, Drug Abuse Prevention Program for Aboriginal and Vulnerable Youth in Northern and Prairie School Communities, will engage youth in grades 7, 8 and 9 from 117 schools in Aboriginal and vulnerable communities throughout Nunavut, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
The Council on Drug Abuse (CODA) is receiving federal financial support for this project. Partners of this project include: the Canadian Association for School Health (CASH), the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), Safe Schools Manitoba, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education, the Department of Education of the Government of Nunavut, the National Native Addictions Partnership Foundation, as well as other members of the Project Management Advisory Committee.
"This project funding has enabled CODA to reach a new and much broader youth audience," said Lesley Whyte, Executive Director, Council On Drug Abuse. "Through collaboration with our partners and local health promotion intermediaries, our programs are being adapted to meet the needs of multiple communities beyond those we've been able to reach in the past. This is an exciting opportunity to engage youth and empower them to make stronger, healthier and wiser decisions."
Initiatives such as this one are another step in implementing the Government of Canada's National Anti-Drug Strategy, which was announced by Prime Minister Stephen Harper in October 2007.
The federal Drug Strategy Community Initiatives Fund provides financial support for health promotion and prevention projects at the national, provincial and local levels. It addresses a wide range of illicit drug use issues, especially among vulnerable youth.
