Government of Canada Welcomes Japan's Move Toward Easing Restrictions on Beef Imports

ID: 95656

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 12/09/11 -- Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz today welcomed news that Japan is taking steps that could lead to improved access for beef imports from several countries, including Canada.

Japan will review its domestic and import regulations for beef which may lead to expanded access for Canadian beef. Japan will hold public hearings and a risk assessment will be conducted by Japan's Food Safety Commission on each country.

"We welcome Japan's decision to review their import policy on beef and we expect by taking a science-based approach to this process, Japanese customers will benefit from expanded access to Canada's safe, high quality beef," said Minister Ritz. "We will continue to collaborate with Japanese officials so that this review proceeds as quickly as possible and so that our beef producers can continue to strengthen their bottom line through increased trade."

"We welcome this development and look forward to Japan making an informed decision, based on scientific evidence," said International Trade Minister Ed Fast. "We are committed to deepening our economic ties with Japan by ensuring that trade flows freely between our countries. Creating more opportunities and prosperity for hardworking Canadians is the focus of our government's job-creating, pro-trade plan, and strengthening the trade and investment ties between Canada and Japan is key to our efforts."

In 2010, Canada's exports of beef under 21 months of age to Japan totalled $81.4 million. A significant increase in exports is expected with expanded access.
