Monterey, CA - December 13, 2011 - CerMed International (Frankfurt Stock
Exchange: CRX), an international women's medical device company, announced today
that an initial clinical trial for its CerCap device, a multipurpose, drug-
eluting cervical barrier cap that provides the dual benefits of contraception
and a reduction of the risk of infection with HIV, will begin January 2012 in
Zimbabwe. The University of Zimbabwe, College of Health Sciences, Department of
Obstetrics and Gynecology has recently received authorization, from both the
Medicines Control (MCAZ) and the Medical Research (MRCZ) Authorities of
Zimbabwe, to conduct a Phase I safety and acceptability clinical trial, on the
long term continuous use of the Company's CerCap, cervical barrier cap, in women
over a 21 day period.
The contribution of unwanted pregnancy to female mortality worldwide, along with
the devastating consequences of the HIV epidemic to women of reproductive age,
urges a convergence in pregnancy and HIV prevention. The intravaginal placement
of the CerCap device for a period of 21 days will provide a unique option for
women, especially in areas of the world where HIV and AIDS are rampant, by
combining long-term protection against unplanned pregnancy and a reduction in
the risk of HIV infection. CerMed is working closely with researchers in
Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California in San Francisco and
the University of Zimbabwe on this project.
Drew Hofmann, Executive VP & COO of the Company, stated: "We are excited to kick
off this initial clinical trial for our CerCap device in Zimbabwe. To our
knowledge, there are currently no dual purpose, women controlled contraceptive
products available that can provide both contraception and the reduction in the
risk of contracting HIV infection except for condoms (male and female), and none
offering protection from transmission of STDs, including HIV, via vaginally
administered drugs."
The trial is expected to begin in January 2012 and last for up to six months.
