ETLog Health conducts waste training programs in Zambia

Berlin/Lusaka. ETLog Health was commissioned by AT-Verband and InWEnt to carry out training measures for decision-makers in selected Zambian hospitals in Lusaka. The project was financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). According to the BMZ, the aim of Zambian-German co-operation is to reduce the extensive poverty in the country. German activities in Zambia are concentrated on the topics of water provision, de-centralization as well as the development of good government and of civil society.

The five-day course of ETLog Health aims to use measures of practice-oriented further-education in order to develop strategies for the improvement of the provision of water and sanitation in areas of urban poverty in order to implement them within the framework of subsequent pilot projects. The training measures had the following specific foci: the classification of hospital waste according to its risk potential; waste-separation at the point of generation; the legal conditions and provisions on the communal level for sustainable management of hospital waste; strategic options for the handling of problem cases in consideration of the financial, environmental and social costs, as well as local legislation and evaluation of the costs and fees for sustainable management of hospital waste. Consultation is currently being conducted to ensure the continuation of this important project.
