Thousands of Images, Zero Descriptions: KWT Spider 2.0 Targets a Web-Wide Accessibility Gap

New auditing feature counts and locates every image missing alt text across a site, closing a blind spot in both accessibility and image search.

(firmenpresse) - KWT Spider announced a new auditing capability in version 2.0 of its desktop SEO crawler, built to locate every image on a website that is missing alt text — the short written description that makes an image usable to screen readers and visible to image search.

The addition responds to a problem that rarely gets measured directly: most websites don't know how many of their images lack this basic tag, because nothing in a typical publishing workflow forces anyone to check.

The Problem: A Gap That Grows Without Anyone Noticing
Alt text has been a basic web standard for decades, but it's rarely enforced in practice. Images get added by different people, through different tools, over years of a website's life — a blog post here, a product photo there, a banner uploaded by someone who's since left the company. None of it gets flagged as incomplete, because there's no error, no broken page, nothing that shows up in a typical status check.

The result is quiet accumulation. A missing alt tag on one image is nothing. Spread across a site with years of content behind it, it can mean hundreds or thousands of images that are effectively invisible to two audiences at once: people using screen readers, who rely on alt text to know what an image shows, and search engines, which have no other reliable way to index a picture's content.

"It's one of those problems everyone technically knows about but almost nobody has actual numbers on," said a product lead at KWT Spider. "Ask most site owners how many images on their site are missing alt text and they honestly don’t know. It's not that they don't care — it's that there's never been an easy way to find out."

How It Works
KWT Spider 2.0 reviews every image discovered during a site crawl and separates them into three categories: images with no alt attribute at all, images with an empty or placeholder alt attribute, and images with alt text present. Each flagged image is reported with the page it appears on, so the issue can be traced and fixed directly rather than searched for by hand.

The check runs as part of a standard crawl alongside the tool's other technical findings — broken links, duplicate content, structured data errors, and site structure issues — rather than requiring a separate accessibility-specific scan.

The company was careful to frame the feature's purpose narrowly. Adding alt text is not positioned as a ranking strategy, and KWT Spider does not claim it will move search results on its own. Its stated purpose is more basic: giving site owners an accurate count of a problem that's currently invisible to most of them, and a starting point for fixing it.

Availability
Alt text auditing is included in KWT Spider 2.0 at no additional cost and is available now to both new and existing users. It runs automatically as part of a full site crawl and requires no separate setup. Results can be reviewed within the application or exported alongside the rest of a site's crawl data.
