Russell Indexes 2011 Recap: Russell 1000(R) Index Ends Year Up 1.5%, Russell 2000(R) Index Down (-4.2%)

(firmenpresse) - SEATTLE, WA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/04/12 -- The U.S. large cap Russell 1000 Index reflected a yearly return of +1.5%, outperforming the U.S. small cap Russell 2000 Index, which posted a loss of (-4.2%) for 2011. Looking closer at the sector returns for these two indexes; the Consumer Staples and Utilities sectors were top performers in the Russell 1000 Index in 2011, reflecting returns of +14.5% and +12.6% respectively. The Utilities and Consumer Staples sectors also outperformed other sectors in the Russell 2000 Index, reflecting returns of +10.5% and +5.0% during 2011.

The weakest sector in these indexes for 2011 included the Financial Services sector (-12.9%) in the Russell 1000 Index and Materials & Processing (-9.0%) in the Russell 2000 Index.

As for investment styles, the Russell 1000 Defensive Index posted a +9% return for the year, while the Russell 1000 Dynamic Index reflected a return of (-6.1%) for 2011. In regards to top 5 and bottom 5 performing countries in the Russell Global Index, Ireland (+7.2%), New Zealand (+4.5%), Indonesia (+4.4%), Philippines (+2.9%) and USA (+1.0%) led for the year, while Austria (-35.0%), Turkey (-35.1%), India (-37.6%), Egypt (-45.3%), and Greece (-56.7%) reflected the weakest returns for 2011.
