Britain's Got Sole-Brogues Are Back!

(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 01/05/12 -- If you can tell a gentleman by the shoes he wears, then Britain is going through a renaissance of civility - are soaring in popularity once again.

After decades of decline, the shoe of choice for Pall Mall clubs, City institutions and Royalty has come back into fashion, says high street retailer .

It's a major shift in popular tastes, with demand for brogues now outstripping , and other casual styles. Since September sales are up a whopping 61% year on year.

The retailer has upped its brogue offer by 100% compared to last year and has added additional colours to its range, however the classic tan and brown are still the most popular.

Said Debenhams spokesman Ed Watson: "These are the shoes upon which Britain once built an empire."

"Formal yet tough, tightly laced and shining with military-like splendour, they summed up a nation and seemed to come with a stiff upper lip as standard."

"We thought the Swinging Sixties had swept those values away for good - but we were wrong. Brogues are back, and they've never been more popular than they are now."

Brogues were once the mark of Whitehall civil servants, chief executives of major companies and members of respectable golf clubs across the country.

No man who wanted to be taken seriously would ever dream of wearing anything else - they were as vital as a well-tailored pin-striped suit.

However the end of National Service and a rapid move away from symbols of authority in the 1960s saw sales of brogues decline rapidly.

Instead they were replaced with Chelsea boots, suede shoes and the style most loathed by the establishment - the slip on shoe.

Brogues quickly became associated with Old Fogeys, retired generals and fuddy duddies all over the country.

The age of the formal shoe vanished, with senior official figures opting for a more casual style even on the most formal occasion.

Since then entire generations of young people in Britain have grown up, never having known what a brogue was, often preferring to wear shoes with Velcro fastenings instead of laces, before moving on to trainers.

However, Debenhams figures show that brogues suddenly began to grow in popularity two years ago.

Experts believe that the trend may have initially been sparked by a rapidly increasing number of job applicants wanting to make a good impression during interviews in the wake of the recession.

However, demand has continued to soar since then, boosted by the formality of The Royal Wedding, and a desire by men to have shoes which can look smart on every occasion.

Said Debenhams Ed Watson: "We're now seeing men wearing brogues informally with jeans and T-shirts as well as with three piece suits."

"Cash conscious customers are realising that buying brogues which work well with every style is cheaper than buying several pairs of shoes for specific events."

"As a result, brogues are now more associated with boy bands and breakdancers than businessmen and brigadiers."

"It's a classic shoe design which has been rediscovered by the young and reinvented to fit in with their lifestyle."

Brogues got their name from their hallmark decorative perforations or 'brogueing' which form part of the typical design.

Debenhams have brogues available from Rocha. John Rocha, Red Herring, J Jeans by Jasper Conran and Loake with prices starting at GBP 45.
