NPQH Dismissal Should Boost Headship Revival, Guardian Jobs Report
What's Next for Headship Positions as the NPQH Qualification is Scrapped?

(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 01/06/12 -- The teaching sector is still digesting the news that the NPQH will not be compulsory from September 2012. The qualification, which was announced at the 1995 Conservative Party Conference, has a chequered history with several attempts to make it mandatory, before it was required of all heads in 2004. Its dismissal comes as part of an effort to boost a revival in the numbers of candidates applying for head positions, but what does this mean for head teaching in 2012? Guardian Jobs investigates.
Setting aside the need for a headship qualification will make it easier for school finance officers and others without Qualified Teacher Status to consider applying for headships.
Almost half of all headship positions are advertised during the first three months of the calendar year. With more settled conditions, and fewer heads reaching retirement age, this number fell during 2011 leading to a fall in the number of vacancies on offer back towards the longer-term average, a trend likely to continue during 2012.
A survey for the NAHT still showed considerable difficulty in filling vacancies during the early part of the year, especially in the primary sector. However, the change from creating academies by closing existing schools meant fewer new secondary headships on offer: a trend likely to continue in 2012. However, this year, there will be more top jobs in the emerging free school sector this year. The NAHT survey also conveyed a decrease in the number of deputy and assistant posts nationally advertised in 2011 - where newly appointed heads are generally drawn from. The decline in the number of these posts advertised is likely to continue during 2012.
2012 looks like being the year governing bodies seeking a new head could breathe a bit easier, but the falling number of new deputies and assistant heads may be storing up recruitment problems for the future, as the pool of eligible future heads reduces, especially in the primary sector where around 2,000 headship appointments are made each year compared with around 350 in the secondary sector, and 100 in special schools and units. At this point, any change could lead to dramatic progress within the teaching industry.
