HMCS Charlottetown Sets Sail to the Mediterranean Sea

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 01/08/12 -- Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Charlottetown set sail today to replace HMCS Vancouver and join other NATO ships participating in Operation Active Endeavour, NATO's counter-terrorism effort in the Mediterranean Sea.
HMCS Charlottetown will serve as Canada's contribution to this NATO-led operation, and will remain deployed until the summer of 2012. HMCS Charlottetown returned from the same region in September 2011, when the ship underwent a complete change of its crew, who have been preparing for this mission for the last several months.
"Canada will keep at least one warship deployed in the Mediterranean Sea throughout 2012 in order to participate in Operation Active Endeavour, the NATO counter-terrorism effort in the region," said Greg Kerr, Member of Parliament for West Nova. "HMCS Charlottetown's presence in the Mediterranean Sea under Operation Active Endeavour gives the Government of Canada the capability to respond to any future crises in the region."
"The men and women of the Canadian Forces always make this country proud and I know that they will represent our values and interests in the Mediterranean Sea with honour," said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence. "These international operations enhance the safety and security of Canadians, and demonstrate to the world Canada's resolve to combat terrorism."
"Like all members of the Canadian Forces, the men and women of HMCS Charlottetown are committed to protecting Canadians' safety and security, at home and abroad," said Vice-Admiral Paul Maddison, Commander Royal Canadian Navy. "This deployment supports the Government of Canada's defence and foreign policy priorities, and national and collective security objectives."
Operation Active Endeavour is a NATO maritime security operation in the Mediterranean Sea, and is designed to prevent the movement of terrorists or weapons of mass destruction, as well as enhance the security of shipping in general.
HMCS Charlottetown is a Halifax-based Canadian patrol frigate with a crew of over 250 personnel which includes a CH-124 Sea King helicopter air detachment. The frigate is commanded by Commander Wade Carter.
