(firmenpresse) - HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/10/12 -- New residential construction in Halifax increased last month compared to December 2010 according to preliminary data(1) released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). There were 508 housing starts recorded in December compared to 106 last year. Single-detached starts decreased from 90 to 63 units while multiple starts increased from 16 to 445 units. On a full year basis, single starts declined 13 per cent in Halifax while multiple-unit starts increased 52 per cent.

"Starts in Halifax in 2011 were supported by a high level of multiples activity, specifically apartment- style rental unit construction," said Matthew Gilmore, senior market analyst with CMHC's Atlantic Business Centre. "Apartment starts finished the year strong as builders broke ground on 383 units in December, bringing the annual total to 1,724."Single starts declined last month and finished the year down 13 per cent compared to 2010.

In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts recorded in December were up 25 per cent to 14,980 units compared to 12,012 a year ago. Single-detached starts increased ten per cent to 5,506 units, while multiple starts increased 35 per cent to 9,474 units in December. In the Atlantic region, 1,047 new units were started compared to 611 during December 2010.
