Demand for Original Oil Paintings Now Dominates in Boston Area Art Galleries

(firmenpresse) - WELLESLEY, MA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/12/12 -- Since J. Todd Galleries' introduction into the Boston art market in the early 1980's, the demand for original oils has grown more than twenty-fold at the Wellesley, MA establishment according to Gallery Director, Robert Totaro. And Totaro says that the same phenomenon has held true across the Boston area, according to his network of area art dealers.

In the 1980's limited edition prints were in high demand. Collectors felt that oil paintings were what their grandparents collected, and that prints were more contemporary. But, by the mid-1990's, the age-old benefits of oils became more apparent to collectors once again, and by the year 2000 they were back in dominance. By 2010, according to Totaro, his gallery was selling oils on canvas to 95% of his clients.

J. Todd Galleries now feels compelled to stock over 2,000 original oil paintings, priced between $300 and $75,000 (many between $1,000 and $10,000) a good number of which can be viewed online at . The gallery, now one of the largest in Boston and the Northeast region, hosts a massive website filled with many museum quality landscapes, seascapes, city scenes, still life paintings, interior scenes, figure paintings, abstracts and more, mostly by contemporary American and European artists.

Totaro says that oils have so many advantages over prints. Of course, texture and color are both richer in an original oil, but the paintings are also more durable, resistant to fading and do not have to be covered with glass which detracts from the immediacy of the work of art. And, surprisingly, oils are less costly to frame than are prints, since the frames require fewer components. And because of the integrity of the materials, oil paintings respond much better to art restoration in the event of damage. Also, over the centuries, oils have outperformed other media in terms of investment.

Now in its 30th year in business, J. Todd Galleries has sold artwork to collectors from every Continent. The gallery's broad selection of original oil paintings on canvas is unsurpassed in New England. The gallery also offers art restoration, appraisal and custom picture framing.
