Ed Young, Jr. Book Finds Affirmation in CNN Editorial on Sex and the Church
Texas Megachurch Pastor Ed Young, Jr. Finds His Unconventional Teachings on Sex and Marriage Echoed in New CNN Editorial
(firmenpresse) - GRAPEVINE, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 01/17/12 -- Historically, sex and the Christian faith have been unlikely bedfellows, with many more conservative congregations choosing to largely avoid the subject. One member of the clergy is trying to change that. According to a recent CNN editorial by Fr. Albert Cutie, the notion of sexuality as a taboo topic is one that more and more religious people are rejecting, including many pastors and priests. In the article, Cutie points to the fact that all people are created by God to be "sexual beings," and cites a verse from 1 Timothy that suggests even priests ought to marry. This rethinking of traditional Church policies about sex and marriage comes at just the right time to affirm the teachings of , an evangelical minister whose book "Sexperiment" is similarly causing a stir in some religious circles.
While some within the religious community view sexuality as something frivolous or trashy, Ed Young's book suggests that intimacy within the confines of marriage is not only acceptable, but necessary. Ed Young, Jr. writes that "creative sex in marriage" is created by God. His point finds strong affirmation in the CNN editorial, which similarly links sexuality to God's act of creation.
Cutie's CNN editorial goes further, saying that "the imposition of celibacy" among members of the clergy might prove not just harmful, but unnatural. Ed Young, Jr. argues along similar lines in his book, suggesting that sex within marriage is part of God's intention for all of humanity. In "Sexperiment," Ed Young proposes that marital intimacy creates "a deeper understanding of God's plan for [one's] marriage," a point that finds a potent echo in Cutie's own writing.
"Sexperiment" is based on the idea that sex is an important building block of any happy and healthy marriage. chronicles the various benefits of intimacy within a marriage, and also issues a challenge to his readers. "Sexperiment" exhorts Christian married couples to have sex together every day for a week, and then evaluate how it has affected their marriage.
CNN's editorial, meanwhile, considers problems that have arisen in the Church due to a lack of clear teaching on the role of sex within marriage, suggesting many of these problems might be avoided through "greater openness and transparency."
