Report Reveals Potential Scale and Impact of Federal Cutbacks
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 01/23/12 -- A new study calls attention to the dramatic impact of cuts already announced by the federal government on services to Canadians. The report's authors attempt to fill the information gap created by what they describe a "purposeful and strategic lack of transparency" on the part of the federal government.
"By setting out the full scope of the cuts this study is performing a valuable public service," argues Gary Corbett, President of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC). "The study suggests that the Harper government is not being transparent about its plans for public services. Without this essential information Canadians can't determine whether cuts are appropriate - they don't truly know what they stand to lose".
The study -"The Cuts Behind the Curtain"- was released today by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA). David Macdonald, Senior Economist at CCPA, created three scenarios that explore the impact of the next two waves of federal cuts and found between 60,100 and 68,300 Canadians will lose their jobs, with the National Capital Region predicted to lose 22,000 and Atlantic Canada suffering 5,400 job losses.
The Professional Institute represents some 60,000 professionals and scientists across Canada's public sector, including biologists and other physical scientists, medical and IT professionals, engineers, auditors and others.
"Recent cuts at Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency are just the first drops in a very large bucket when it comes to the impact on programs that protect the health and safety of Canadians and preserve our environment," says Corbett. The government has recently announced cuts to professional positions dealing with climate change, fish stock management, food inspection, monitoring water quality and pollution. "Our members are professionals whose jobs can be summed up as protecting Canadians. Any time thousands of their positions are on the line, public safety demands a full and transparent accounting of the impact," concludes Corbett.
