Investigation Into Accident Claim Spam Texts
(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 01/30/12 -- On 8th December 2011, The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) published news regarding the proliferation of unsolicited text messages from unknown sources. The article came off the back of a study of around 1,000 people showing that texts offering were the most common spam text messages and that 95% of people find these texts either 'inconvenient, concerning or distressing'.
The ICO have been investigating these spam texts since the beginning of 2011 and are working with other bodies including the Office of Fair Trading, Ministry of Justice and mobile phone companies to try to establish the source of the text messages.
The texts seem to breach the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations because they are sent to people without prior consent and without identifying the sender. The ICO have advised that their enquiries show that the texts may come from unregistered pay as you go SIM cards. The ICO also gathered comments from members of the public including a mother whose 11 year old son had been receiving texts about making compensation claims.
The ICO believe that the companies who are generating these text messages are doing so at random and may be sending many hundreds or thousands of messages in the hope of reaching someone to whom it may apply.

In September 2011, Karl Tonks the vice president of APIL told the BBC's Today programme that, "Solicitors are robustly regulated in this, we simply cannot and do not do it. Others are not so well regulated and we would welcome an effective ban of those text messages and unsolicited phone calls."
