(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 02/01/12 -- The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today issued the following statement to recognize Black History Month:

"February marks Black History Month. Every year Canadians are invited to take part in the activities that commemorate the legacy of Black Canadians, past and present. This is a time to celebrate their many contributions which have helped shape the strong multicultural and diverse country we have today.

Our Government proudly salutes the members of Canada's Black community who have put their lives on the line while defending peace and freedom. These brave men and women have a long tradition of wearing Canada's uniform and colours.

Whether defending Canada in the War of 1812; serving in the trenches or with the No. 2 Construction Battalion during the First World War; fighting far from home during the Second World War and in Korea; participating in peace missions across the world; or serving selflessly in Afghanistan, the sacrifices of these Canadians deserve our admiration and gratitude.

February is their month. I invite each of you to think about the generations of Black Canadians who are part of our collective, national memory. Let us also support those who serve in the Canadian Forces with pride today."

More information on the military contributions of Black Canadians can be found on the Veterans Affairs Canada Web site at veterans.gc.ca.
