(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 02/03/12 -- Today, the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, launched International Development Week (IDW) 2012 and invited Canadians to participate in events organized by the international development community across Canada.

"During International Development Week, Canadians have an opportunity to learn about how Canada is making a difference around the world in developing countries, particularly for women and girls," said Minister Oda. "I invite all Canadians to participate in the numerous planned activities and events across Canada. We can take pride in our achievements and the progress being made to reduce poverty, enrol more children in schools, and lives being saved."

IDW highlights the work of Canada's development community and aims to better connect this work to Canadians. This year's celebrations are focused on empowering women and girls, particularly their role in economic growth.

CIDA and partner organizations are planning various events throughout the country to increase awareness about international issues and to demonstrate how Canadians, from different backgrounds, and especially youth, are making a difference to help developing countries.

International Development Week is an initiative made possible through CIDA's partnership with Canada's regional and provincial councils for international cooperation.

For more information about IDW, as well as resources and a list of events organized throughout Canada from February 5 to11, visit CIDA's web page.
