University of Calgary: Students to tear up the slopes on concrete toboggans

(firmenpresse) - CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/09/12 -- Crash helmets aren't usually required for engineering competitions. But when you're racing sleds made out of concrete at 80 kilometres per hour, helmets are mandatory. So are roll cages and reliable braking systems.
Hundreds of engineering students from 19 post-secondary institutions across Canada have converged upon Calgary for the 38th annual Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race. The University of Calgary's Schulich School of Engineering is hosting this year's competition, which puts student-built sleds to the ultimate test.
Students from the Schulich School of Engineering were declared the national champions at least year's event in Edmonton, which was hosted by the University of Alberta.
