Funkwerk suppliesÖBB with GSM-R handhelds
Basic contract for supply of estimated more than 2,000 focX handhelds
Funkwerk AG has secured a new contract from Austrian railway companyÖBB
for the supply of GSM-R handhelds. The basic contract involving the
delivery of an estimated more than 2,000 handheld devices of the new focX
product range is scheduled to run until 2016.
Kölleda, 20 February 2012: In a bidding contest, theÖBB opted for products
from Funkwerk AG as a specialist in communication systems for railway
companies and the European market leader in mobile GSM-R train radio
systems. GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communication for Railways) was
introduced as the standard for digital information transfer in an effort to
harmonise European rail transport. Today, this trendsetting technology is
used by as many as 32 railway companies in Europe. TheÖBB first acquired
train radio equipment and systems from Funkwerk in 2004 - along with a
number of other rail operators throughout Europe.
The focX handhelds now ordered byÖBB are based on the latest GSM-R
standard and are designed to transfer voice and data in rail-specific
mobile radio communication. Rated to IP 65, their protection against dust
and water jets makes them particularly suited for use in very tough
environments.
As part of its ongoing reorientation, Funkwerk is consistently focusing
efforts in its Traffic and Control Communication segment on train and rail
transport while systematically improving its international market position.
