(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 02/24/12 -- The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, and the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), General Walter Natynczyk, spoke in Ottawa today at the 2012 Conference on Defence and Security, an event hosted by the Conference of Defence Associations Institute (CDAI).

Minister MacKay took the opportunity to reflect on some of the major events and operations experienced during his time at National Defence. Amongst these, he stressed how the sacrifices and achievements of the Canadian Forces has earned them the respect of Canadians, and strengthened Canada's place in the world. Minister MacKay also outlined the Government's plans to build on these successes in the coming years through strategic investments and enhanced partnerships with Canada's defence allies.

"The hard-earned success of the Canadian Forces, and the goodwill that our men and women in uniform have fostered with Canadians, is a true testament to the work that has been accomplished in re-building our military. As the Government of Canada looks to the future, I continue to have great confidence in the ability of the Canadian Forces to meet whatever challenges lie ahead," said MacKay.

The CDS also addressed the audience, stating that the CF have enjoyed great success in their operations, both at home and abroad, and that they have demonstrated the ability to respond quickly and effectively along the whole spectrum of operations.

"The Canadian Forces have achieved great success at home and abroad over the past year. Our achievements are due to the professionalism of the men and women in uniform, who are the core of our institution," said General Natynczyk. "Ensuring that they are well trained and equipped for the uncertainties of tomorrow is our collective duty. Caring for them and their families is key to enabling their current and future successes."

The CDAI is a charitable and non-partisan organization whose mandate is to provide research support to the Conference of Defence Associations and to promote informed public debate on national security and defence issues. The event's audience comprised current and former members of the CF, Senators, Members of Parliament, members of the CDAI component organizations, as well as academics, students, and defence industry representatives.
