Kaiser Demonstrating Leadership in Health Care Sector's Role in Improving Public Health

(firmenpresse) - WASHINGTON, DC -- (Marketwire) -- 02/28/12 -- Today, Health Care Without Harm praised Kaiser Permanente for its announcement that it will reduce its carbon footprint by 30 percent by 2020, calling the move "foresighted" and a significant step toward improving public health by improving the environment.

"Kaiser Permanente is demonstrating how hospitals can reduce their climate change impact as part of their core mission to support healthy people in healthy communities," stated Gary Cohen, president and founder of Health Care Without Harm.

By targeting greenhouse gases, Kaiser Permanente is making a bold move to lead the health care sector in reducing the health effects associated with climate change. It is the latest in a series of innovations and commitments made by Kaiser Permanente to reduce its environmental footprint and associated health issues.

Kaiser Permanente is a founding sponsor of the Healthier Hospitals Initiative (HHI), an effort to speed health care sustainability through a variety of programs designed for hospitals to begin implementing sustainable measures, and to use hospital purchasing power to change the marketplace to make more sustainable products available to hospitals.

In April, HHI will launch a new program to accelerate the adoption of energy efficiency and other sustainability improvements across the health care sector. "We want to support healthcare to be a leader in addressing the climate crisis by reducing its addiction to fossil fuels. This will help reduce disease in our society and reduce healthcare costs," said Cohen. HCWH is also a founding sponsor of HHI, which in addition to Kaiser Permanente, includes 10 of the nation's leading hospital systems.

HCWH is an international coalition of more than 500 organizations in 53 countries, working to transform the health care industry worldwide, without compromising patient safety or care, so that it is ecologically sustainable and no longer a source of harm to public health and the environment.
