Europe’s best radio and television programmes on the theme of integration and cultural diversity

(firmenpresse) - CIVIS - Europe's media prize for integration and cultural diversity is open as of now to entries from all EU member states and Switzerland. The search is on for radio and television programmes which deal with the theme of integration and cultural diversity in convincing fashion - without denying the existence of conflicts. In total, the CIVIS Media Prize 2009 is endowed with 41,000 Euro. The closing date for entries is January 20, 2009.

“Migration and cultural diversity increasingly leave their mark on our everyday life. Integration is becoming one of the major challenges for politics and society – nationally, but also internationally. The European media, thereby, have a great responsibility. Because the media not only shows the immigration society – it also forms it”, as WDR Director-General Monika Piel, the Chairwoman of the CIVIS Board of Trustees, points out in her invitation to the European CIVIS competition 2009. Piel thereby encourages those responsible for programmes and journalists in Europe to concern themselves intensively with the themes of the European immigration society.

For two decades now, the CIVIS Media Prize for integration and cultural diversity in Europe has been honouring programme contributions on radio and television which are particularly suitable for the promotion of understanding between different cultures and religious communities. In their programme output, the broadcasting corporations in Europe already devote extensive coverage to the issues of integration and cultural diversity. CIVIS was launched to honour these achievements and, at the same time, stimulate new ideas and perspectives, by highlighting some exemplary case studies from across Europe.

Once again in 2009 the “European Young CIVIS Media Prize” will be open as a European sponsorship prize to young journalists as well as students and graduates of the film and media academies who are not older than 32 years.

To the CIVIS Media Prize 2009 all radio and television broadcasts publicly aired from January 21, 2008 to January 20, 2009 are eligible for entry. All formats and genres are admissible. The ceremony and the television prize-giving of the CIVIS Media Prizes will take place on May 7, 2009 in Berlin. The President of the European Parliament, Prof. Dr. Hans-Gert Pöttering, is the patron.
