Putting the Fun Back in Fundraising, Heart Advocacy Groups Join Forces to Combat Sudden Cardiac Arrest

ID: 121404

(firmenpresse) - WASHINGTON, DC -- (Marketwire) -- 03/05/12 -- Every two minutes, another life is needlessly lost to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in the United States, many times due to the lack of access to immediate lifesaving care of CPR and AED use. The Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association (SCAA) and the Centers for Health and Public Safety (CHPS) today announce a strategic alliance expanding access to lifesaving first aid through responsible educational fundraising programs that will create safer, healthier environments better able to respond to the nation's leading cause of death.

Through this alliance, CHPS and SCAA will provide SCAA's nationwide network of chapters with two unique fundraising opportunities: the "Healthy Fundraiser for a Healthier Community" program and "Safety Kits for School, Work and Life" venture. Both programs are packed with essential first aid supplies for emergency response; however, the "Safety Kits" concept goes one step further in emergency response planning and includes an AED.

"School administrators recognize that CPR and AED awareness and accessibility are important aspects of providing safe and healthy learning environments, yet tough economic times are leaving them without resources to implement these and other lifesaving emergency response plans," said Lisa Levine, CAE, president of SCAA. "These distinctive fundraisers -- similar to gift wrap or cookie dough sales -- are vehicles for schools, students and parent organizations to generate revenue that can be used to purchase and deploy AEDs on campus and potentially impact the SCA survival rate."

"This joint effort will combine SCAA and CHPS resources and skills to educate principals, teachers and families and will strengthen both organizations' missions to prevent loss of life from SCA," said George Wheeler, Jr., president and founder, CPHS. "Our country will be stronger at SCA response as a result of this collaboration."

SCA is an electrical malfunction of the heart's natural rhythm, killing nearly 300,000 Americans each year. It is not the same as a heart attack. SCA strikes without warning, afflicting people of all ages, genders and races -- even children, professional athletes and others seemingly in good health. Without CPR and shocks administered from an AED, people cannot survive SCA. For the last thirty years, the national SCA survival rate has remained a low six percent.

SCAA is the nation's largest nonprofit advocacy organization dedicated to increasing awareness and prevention of sudden cardiac arrest. For more information, please visit .
