(firmenpresse) - FARMINGTON, CT -- (Marketwire) -- 03/05/12 -- Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a novel minimally invasive medical procedure for the treatment of aortic valve stenosis. A progressive, age-related disease, aortic valve stenosis is caused by a buildup of calcium deposits that narrow the aortic valve. As the heart works harder to pump enough blood through the smaller valve opening, it eventually weakens, leading to issues such as fainting, chest pain, heart failure, irregular heart rhythms ("arrhythmias"), and even cardiac arrest.

The Structural Heart Disease Program team at Brigham and Women's Hospital has performed more than 60 TAVR procedures for aortic valve stenosis and is one of only two sites in New England and 30 sites nationwide to participate in the trials evaluating this approach. During the procedure, the prosthetic valve is inserted via a catheter in a vessel in the groin and guided and placed using state-of-the-art imaging. In select cases, a small incision is made in the chest to insert the catheter when the vessel in the groin is too small.

The new MD Video Education Center from Brigham and Women's Hospital highlights a case study of the TAVR procedure and discusses the benefits of this technique and current indication. The MD Video Education Center is a complete resource for physicians to learn about various video case studies from a wide-range of specialties. In addition to video content, the site is a source of clinical and research findings and upcoming continuing medical education (CME) content.
