BIS OKI Isoliertechnik completing work on the world's largest lignite-fuelled power station in Neurath/Grevenbroich, Germany

ID: 122972

(PresseBox) - BIS OKI Isoliertechnik, a member of the Bilfinger Berger Industrial Services Group (BIS Group), has completed work on the thermal and acoustic insulation fitted to the steam generators at the two new blocks of the world's largest lignite-fuelled power station in Neurath/Grevenbroich, Germany. Additional work was performed on the electric filter and flue-gas cleanup systems as well as the heat transfer system. With a total volume of around EUR 40 million, the contract also entailed engineering and the assembly of the trace heating system.
A particular challenge was posed by the newly developed T24 boiler steel (7CrMoVTiB10-10) used to fabricate much of the two steam pressure generators. With its high temperature and pressure resistance, this high-tech steel permits a substantial improvement in efficiency but made particularly high demands during welding. In order to minimise tension, it was necessary to submit the pressure boilers to heat treatment after assembly at a constant temperature of 400° C using adjustable temporary smokestacks assembled by BIS OKI Isoliertechnik.
Weighing up to 60 tons, the collective headerboxes, which were attached to components heated in sequence, also posed major challenges with respect to materials and static engineering. When the systems were started up, the insulation of these stainless-steel fittings had to withstand movement of up to 30 centimetres and a temperature of around 625° C.
With an output of 2,200 MW and a utilisation coefficient of 43 percent, the lignite-fuelled power station operated by RWE Power AG is the world's most efficient facility of this type. BIS OKI performed its work over a period of 36 months, completing the project ahead of schedule at the end of 2011. In peak times, 280 insulation assemblers were deployed at the site, installing 540,000 square metres of mineral wool and 2,320 tons of steel sheeting. The surface requiring insulation has a total area of around 270,000 square metres.

Other BIS Group companies were also involved at the Neurath site, including BIS Izomar, which worked on the insulation for the steam generator.
