(firmenpresse) - CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/13/12 -- The Canadian Energy Pipeline Association (CEPA) supports the Government of Alberta's initiative to establish a group of experts to provide detailed advice on a world-class, science-based environmental monitoring system.

"We are pleased to see that the Alberta government has demonstrated strong leadership and foresight in advancing this initiative," said Dr. Brenda Kenny, president of The Canadian Energy Pipeline Association, which represents the majority of Canada's transmission pipeline companies.

CEPA and its member companies are encouraged that these investments are being made to continue progress on monitoring the environment. The long-term strategic impact of this working group will set the stage in providing citizens and the industry with a clearer understanding of cumulative environmental impacts. It will also improve planning, the ability for regulators to respond appropriately and more timely on individual project decisions in the future.

"CEPA has always been a strong proponent of an efficient, predictable and transparent process," Kenny further stated. "Our members need timely decisions for their pipeline projects, but at the same time, we want to ensure the environment assessment and monitoring process has been given its due diligence."

The Canadian Energy Pipeline Association represents Canada's transmission pipeline companies who operate more than 100,000 kilometres of pipeline in Canada and the United States. These energy highways move approximately 1.2 billion barrels of liquid petroleum products and 5.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas each year. Our members transport 97 per cent of Canada's daily crude oil and natural gas from producing regions to markets throughout North America.
