Donation of Patented Virtual Software Will Help Train the Next Generation of Cyber Professionals

(firmenpresse) - LAUREL, MD -- (Marketwire) -- 03/14/12 -- -- Solera Networks, the leading advanced Security Intelligence and Analytics company, announced its sponsorship of the 7th Annual CyberWatch Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Cyber Defense (CCDC) competition. The company is donating its virtual version of its Solera DeepSee® security platform to arm defending collegiate teams in responding rapidly to network attacks. The event is scheduled for March 14-17 at the Kossiakoff Center at Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Lab in Laurel, MD.

The event pits students from two- and four-year colleges and universities -- 'Blue Teams' against a 'Red Team' of professional hackers trying to disrupt and compromise the network. The competition is unique in that it focuses on the operational aspects of managing and protecting networks from an onslaught of attacks. Student teams are scored based on their ability to: a) detect and respond to outside threats, b) maintain availability of existing services, c) respond to business requests, and d) balance security against business needs. Blue Teams will use the Solera DeepSee platform to uncover and deliver clear evidence of any attack made by the Red Team -- thereby helping them score points and advance in the competition. The winner of the Mid-Atlantic CCDC will move on to represent the region in the National CCDC, April 20-22, 2012, in San Antonio, TX.

Cyber professionals from Solera Networks will be on-hand to participate in the games, observe the competitors and provide expertise and coaching to the aspiring cyber warriors.

"As a leading provider of cybersecurity solutions, we are committed to helping grow the ranks of qualified cyber professionals," said John Vecchi, VP of Marketing at Solera Networks. "As the industry's only virtual solution that captures, indexes, classifies and recreates all network traffic, it is ideal for easy deployment and use in this role-play environment. We've participated with our Solera DeepSee technology at CCDC and other similar war games in the past, allowing the teams to be very successful in delivering real evidence of Red Team activity -- and ultimately scoring points to win the competition."

The competition provides a chance for government and industry officials to observe the exercise, discuss cyber security career choices with top students in the region, and become better informed regarding current trends in security and information assurance.

"Solera's role in the competition is to provide a full record of every network event and security breach," said Casey O'Brien, CCDC Coordinator. "This gives teams a complete collection of data that shows both attack and defense scenarios and the evidence that defending teams will need to score points. It is also an excellent resource for post-event analysis so teams can learn from their activities. We are happy that Solera is providing the students with exposure to enterprise-class technologies that they will certainly use in their future careers."

CCDC is hosted by CyberWatch, Prince George's Community College, the National Science Foundation, ISight Partners, and the Community College of Baltimore County.

The event will be open to the media with a networking event/job fair at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 15. For more information about the competition, go to .
