EMR Sales Exceed 17 Billion Dollars in 2011: Kalorama

(firmenpresse) - NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 03/14/12 -- Propelled by government incentives, a desire to improve patient outcomes and the bottom line, sales of grew 14.2% in 2011, stronger growth than the previous year, according to Kalorama Information. The just completed an annual report on the market which found increasing physician and hospital acceptance, robust competition and growth in EMR budgets. These factors culminated in a $17.9 billion market in 2011, according to the firm's report, .

"Paperless medicine is no longer a concept in a few model hospitals," said Bruce Carlson, publisher of Kalorama Information. "It's something that hospitals and physicians are really incorporating into their workflows. And that is showing up in budgets and increased vendor sales."

The revenue growth mirrors increased physician and institutional usage. Statistics from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) indicate that 56.9% of office-based physicians used partial or full EMR systems in 2011, an increase from 2010. The revenue estimate reflects monies earned by hundreds of companies in the space, though a few top firms dominate the market. Kalorama Information includes all revenues related to EMR in its accounting, including software, consulting, training and service fees sold as part of software purchases which are an important part of business models.

Incentives have been a factor in the increased usage and growth of EMR systems. As part of the ARRA legislation passed in February 2009, the federal government set aside nearly $20 billion in incentives for hospitals and physician practices to adopt electronic medical records. The first incentives were paid in 2011 based on 2010 performance. More than $1.3 billion in Medicare EHR Incentive Program payments have been made between May 2011 and the end of December 2011, and more than $1.1 billion in Medicaid EHR Incentive Program payments have been made between January 2011 and the end of December 2011. But Kalorama does not think the market growth is merely the result of the incentives.

"The incentives and the potential penalty are important, but so is getting the health record to the provider when he or she is in front of a patient," Carlson said.

In its full report, , Kalorama Information breaks out the market for large hospital EMR sales, as well as for physician and web-based sales. It also profiles large players and medium-sized players in the market, offers market share and important trends that could change growth estimates.
