Foundation to Fight Breast Cancer With Education Focused on Natural Prevention

(firmenpresse) - LANSING, MI -- (Marketwire) -- 03/14/12 -- Cutting a woman's breast cancer risk in half and saving lives today is the focus of a new non-profit organization set up to focus educational efforts on under-appreciated natural prevention strategies, most notably correcting epidemic vitamin D deficiency.

The primary objective of the Breast Cancer Natural Prevention Foundation () is to educate health care providers, the scientific community, the media and consumers about the science that supports the preventative effects of diet, exercise and natural vitamin D levels -- perhaps the most powerful breast cancer prevention imperative.

Research has established that maintaining natural vitamin D blood levels cuts breast cancer risk in half. Because vitamin D is made naturally and abundantly when skin is exposed to sunlight -- and because humans today spend more time indoors and less time in the sun than at any point in history -- vitamin D levels are declining and more than two out of three North American women are vitamin D deficient, unnecessarily putting millions of women at an elevated risk for breast cancer.

"We know that vitamin D activates a cell's ability to resist irregular mutation -- that it helps the body fight cancer one cell at a time," BCNPF co-director Marc Sorenson, EdD said. "It only makes sense for medical professionals to default to what levels are natural and intended in the body. That's the message that needs to get out."

In a broader sense, the BCNPF wants to change the way people think about the fight against breast cancer. Most of the prominent breast cancer foundations focus almost exclusively on detection and treatment of the disease, which is surely essential, but the BCNPF aims to fill a void of attention toward natural prevention.

"You don't have to cure what you can prevent," BCNPF co-director Dr. Sandra Russell said. "We are stepping up to bring discussion about natural prevention into the forefront."

The BCNPF hopes to gain the support of advocates in communities across North America to help spread awareness of the powerful preventative effects of diet, exercise and natural vitamin D.
