According to the couple's latest profile post from Marie, "I met Luc in 1994 in Malawi. He worked as an assistant director at the French Cultural Center in Malawi. He still talks about that red dress I wore that caught his eye at an art exhibition he organized. I was then working as a nanny for Ricki Lake, the talk show host. She has continued to be a great supporter of Jacaranda. I continued to send my wages to educate and by 2007 there were 230 Orphans in my house. Then one day Luc wrote to CNN and told them about my work in Malawi. I was nominated as a top 10 CNN Hero of 2008.
I quit my nanny job after several years, to work full time on my foundation, jacarandafoundation.org. From the day Luc moved to Malawi wonders have happened at the school. He masterminded the building of toilets with running water as we had used pit latrines for seven years. He built a full secondary school, a clinic and a physics and science lab on our grounds. He improved the academics of the school and literally transformed the school. Although we continued to live apart since I have had to be in America to fundraise and knock on people's doors for donations, there has never been more than two days when we did not speak or exchange emails. Each ended with the words, 'I Love You.'"
