(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 03/16/12 -- The Government's NewBuy scheme, launched on 12th March, is already attracting enormous customer interest according to leading housebuilder Barratt Developments.

The importance of the scheme which will herald the return of the 95 per cent mortgages for buyers of , was acclaimed by Mark Clare, Chief Executive of Barratt Developments who said "This is potentially a real boost for home buyers who have been locked out of the housing market by the high level of deposits required to buy a home."

"The key thing is that people will no longer need deposits of up to 20 per cent which gives creditworthy buyers the best opportunity for five years to get on the housing ladder.

"This is also a great way to get the economy moving whilst tackling the housing shortage. We know that building creates local jobs so it's good news for everyone in the industry."

Speaking at the official Government launch of the scheme at Barratt's Renaissance development in Lewisham, London, the Prime Minister David Cameron said: "Strong families and stable communities are built from good homes. That's why I want us to build more homes and I want more people to have the chance to own their own home. We're working with leading house builders and lenders to get the scheme underway."

Barratt confirmed that nearly 20,000 potential homebuyers from all over England have pre-registered their interest on the company's website, with the weekly registration rate now hitting 1,500.

The scheme will facilitate mortgages of between 90 and 95% for new build properties and is available on both new build flats and houses up to a maximum purchase price of GBP 500,000 in England only (subject to lenders' criteria).
