Increase of media outcome thanks to the play instinct
The agency GentCom from Hamburg/Germany uses new concepts to increase the media outcome of their clients’ sponsoring in the sailing sport.
Using new communication tools, they appeal to the play instinct of the people to achieve more people outside the classic target group of the sailing sport sector. These concepts are supposed to increase the sponsors’ ROI.

Since October 2008 remote-controlled, true to original sailing model boats of the Volvo Open 70s in scale 1:20 are being used by the Volvo Ocean Race event. These model boats are painted in the original team colours and display the same sponsor brandings as the original boats. At every stopover port of the Volvo Ocean Race, the skippers of the real Volvo Open 70s are steering these model boats in show races for the public. The ambition was to bring the race from the oceans closer to the people at the shore, to increase the memo value and to reach a wider audience. The enthusiasm of the skippers and the audience did prove, that going for the model boats from GentCom had been the right idea for this event.
In 2007 GentCom had already realised a similar concept for their client HSH Nordbank. They created a mobile event construction to promote the HSH Nordbank blue race (formerly known as DCNAC) in northern Germany, near the finish of the race in Hamburg. At selected locations, where many visitors were expected, GentCom presented the blue race with a water basin with wind generators and a video wall. The people could try the remote-controlled model boats, letting them sail in the basin. On the bottom of the basin an image of the race course was displayed, so the people had the feeling to sail on the same track as the sailors on the Atlantic.
On the video wall, the audience could see the race tracker, the most recent pictures and videos from the race. A person explained and commented on the pictures as well as the model boat regattas on the miniature race course. He also explained the sailing rules, manoeuvres and the race course for the audience. This made the race less abstract. With this concept GentCom brought the blue race and the sailing sport closer to the public as any TV report could do.
