The Government of Canada Supports Initiative to Reduce Injuries Among Children and Youth on Ski Hills
(firmenpresse) - COLLINGWOOD, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 03/20/12 -- The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), on behalf of the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Federal Minister of Health, today announced support for SNOWSMART - a project to increase awareness among children and youth about ski and snowboard safety and protect younger children from collisions on ski hills.
"Snow sports are a great way for children and youth to lead active and healthy lives in winter. However, taking risks on hills and not wearing proper safety gear contribute to injuries," said Minister Gosal. "That's why our Government is investing in a project that will help young Canadians make safer choices such as reducing their speed and wearing a helmet."
"Projects like this are a great step forward. They increase awareness regarding the risks, and most importantly, the safe behaviours active children and youth need to be aware of while participating in sports." said Dr. Kellie Leitch, Member of Parliament for Simcoe-Grey.
SMARTRISK Foundation, in partnership with the Canadian Ski Patrol System and Canada Snowboard, will raise awareness about ski and snowboard safety to help youth and parents better manage risks on ski hills. SNOWSMART includes activities such as the "Get Caught" initiative, which rewards children and youth for taking an active role to reduce their risk of injury, and a website and video competition. The project will also distribute bright bibs to easily identify younger children on ski hills and encourage other skiers and snowboarders to slow down around young skiers and give them extra space.
"Helping children and youth make safer choices is the first step toward preventing injuries from occurring," said Philip Groff, President and CEO of SMARTRISK. "This project enables us to reach out to young Canadians and their parents so they have the information they need to protect themselves and others from possible injury on ski hills."
Through the Public Health Agency of Canada's Active and Safe initiative, the federal government supports a number of projects that focus on preventing injuries and reaching Canadians in the communities where they live and play. Active and Safe encourages community level action to increase sport and recreation safety awareness.

Unintentional Injuries among Children and Youth in Canada
While the Government of Canada encourages Canada's children and youth to become more active and lead healthy lifestyles, we also want to ensure their safety while being active. Through the Public Health Agency of Canada's Active and Safe initiative, the Government of Canada is investing $5 million over two years to support a number of community-based activities that empower Canadians to make safe choices while engaged in sport and recreation activities. Today's announcement for $200,000 will support a project to reduce injuries among children and youth on ski hills.
SNOWSMART
This project will be led by the SMARTRISK Foundation, in partnership with the Canadian Ski Patrol System and Canada Snowboard, to raise awareness among children, youth and their parents on how they can make better choices to ski and snowboard safely. The project will focus on the risk of excessive speed, the importance of skiing and snowboarding in control, and strategies to avoid collisions on ski hills.
