Transmode extends Flexible Optical Networking portfolio with colorless capabilities
(Thomson Reuters ONE) -
Stockholm, Sweden and Broadband MEA, Dubai - 26(th) March 2012 - Transmode, a
global supplier of packet optical networking solutions, today announced the
enhancement of its Flexible Optical Networking portfolio with the addition of a
colorless mux/demux module that enables colorless ROADM configurations.
To meet the growing demands for increased network flexibility and remote
configuration capabilities, Transmode has introduced the new colorless 16-
channel mux/demux module for its popular TM-Series. The new module allows
designers to create networks with colorless ROADM capabilities allowing
increased flexibility in traffic routing and restoration. In conjunction with
tunable optics in traffic units, the new module also allows remote provisioning
and reconfiguration of wavelengths without the need for any onsite visits after
a traffic unit has been connected to the new colorless module. Colorless ROADM
nodes overcome some of the issues with standard ROADM nodes where switching
traffic from Route A to Route B could be blocked if the switched wavelength is
already in use on Route B. Now the node can also change the traffic to a new
wavelength that is available on Route B.
"Transmode's Flexible Optical Networking portfolio has seen rapid growth in
deployments over recent quarters with a large percentage of new design wins
utilizing this portfolio," said Sten Nordell, Transmode's CTO. "Several of our
recently announced customer wins use this approach as the basis for a broad
range of applications. This shows the importance of these networks and
Transmode's success in this space. This new product will further strengthen this
offering."
The TM-Series contains 2, 4 and 8 degree ROADM modules that enable network
operators to selectively build a range of ROADM nodes for a wide range of
applications. These nodes can be standard ROADM nodes or directionless or
contentionless configurations. The addition of the colorless mux/demux enables
what is known as colorless, directionless and contentionless, or CDC, ROADM
nodes.
"This new development adds valuable new capabilities to the TM-Series in the
important area of Flexible Optical Networks," said Dave Dunphy, Principal
Analyst at Telecom Strategy Partners. "The key development here beyond creating
a product with the best price and performance, was the integration of these
capabilities into Transmode's management platform, the Transmode Network
Manager. These solutions are often deployed in sophisticated networks that
encompass a Flexible Optical Network base layer with a combination of Layer 1
and Layer 2 services. Providing powerful multi-layer management of these large
and complex networks is therefore vitally important."
Definitions:
ROADM - Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer - A device that can remotely
switch traffic in a DWDM system at the wavelength layer.
Colorless ROADM - A ROADM node that can also change the wavelength of switched
traffic.
Directionless ROADM - A ROADM node that can support multi-directional nodes and
switch traffic in any direction
Contentionless ROADM - A ROADM node (typically already colorless and
directionless) that has further elements to overcome some blocking conditions
that could occur.

About Transmode
Transmode is a global provider of packet-optical networking solutions that
enable fixed line and mobile network operators to cost effectively address the
capacity needs created by the rapid growth in video and data traffic. These
solutions are important building blocks in next-generation high-speed optical
networks that support services such as broadband backhaul, mobile data backhaul,
video delivery services and cloud computing. Transmode's solutions are based on
Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) and packet optical transport
technologies, which are designed to increase the capacity, flexibility and
functionality of optical metro core and metro access networks. Transmode's
Intelligent WDM (iWDM(TM)) approach gives key advantages to customers, such as
ultra-low latency, low power consumption and innovative network design.
Transmode is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden and is listed on the NASDAQ-OMX
Stockholm Exchange (TRMO). Since 2000 the company has installed more than
30,000 systems for over 400 fixed and mobile network operators, service
providers, large enterprises and public institutions in over 40 countries across
the globe.
