National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) Develops Systematic Preschool Assessment
The Early Learning Scale Will Be Available April 4

(firmenpresse) - NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ -- (Marketwire) -- 03/28/12 -- After five years of research, development and pilot testing, NIEER's Early Learning Scale -- or ELS -- will soon be available to preschool programs nationwide. Published by Lakeshore Learning Materials, this new assessment system will be available April 4.
The ELS is an authentic, observation-based performance that informs teaching and targets the individual needs of children ages 3 to 5. Focusing on 10 measureable items across three domains -- Math/Science, Social-Emotional/Social Studies and Language & Literacy -- the ELS provides teachers with a manageable, flexible and reliable tool for assessing children's progress toward early learning standards and expectations.
Using a curriculum-neutral approach, the ELS is designed to help educators become "participant observers" who use rich data to make accurate evaluations, plan instruction and develop true partnerships with parents and caregivers. As documented in research, the ELS is a reliable and valid assessment system for young children. (View the technical report at .)
The ELS comes with substantial support materials -- including a comprehensive teacher guidebook complete with sample observational anecdotes and ideas for teaching and documenting. In addition, the ELS includes English/Spanish family guides that help parents and caregivers become true partners in their child's education. (The ELS is also supported by in-person or online training as well as reliability certification.)
For preschool programs interested in online capabilities, the ELS is available in paperless format over the Internet. The online version of the ELS was developed in conjunction with The Center: Resources for Teaching & Learning and is identical to the print version, except that the data is entered online and is available for evaluation electronically. Plus, the online version of the ELS offers handheld capabilities. Using a smartphone or tablet, teachers can record observations in real time and then upload them to the website, where observations are linked to items on the ELS.
