Richmond Outreach Center Draws Attention as More Churches Offer Addiction Recovery Programs
Faith-Based Communities and Church Congregations Around the Country Are Beginning to Offer Addiction Recovery Programs to Those in Need -- and the Virginia-Based Richmond Outreach Center Is Leading the Way

Beyond their shared sense of belief, however, there can be much diversity among people of faith, even within a single church. This includes not just different ages or nationalities, but also different physical needs -- including the need for rehabilitation from substance addiction. A recent Oklahoma news highlights the fact that churches around the country are developing programs to help congregants overcome addiction, and a Virginia-based church called the Richmond Outreach Center is leading the way.
According to the report, it is a growing trend among churches to recognize that many of the men and women who fill their pews are in fact addicts, and are zealous for recovery. As a result, these churches are taking it upon themselves to either develop their own addiction recovery programs, or to house outside programs, making them more accessible to church members.
But while this is a recent development for many congregations, it has long been a ministry focus at the . This Virginia congregation, originally conceived as an inner-city outreach organization, proudly offers a wide range of community services, including addiction rehab programs. Pastor Geronimo Aguilar says this new trend among religious bodies is nothing if not inspiring. "I am so glad there are other faith-based organizations who care about reaching out to those who are battling drug addiction," he enthuses.
Aguilar also notes that the Richmond Outreach Center's own work in addiction recovery programs has been trailblazing. "Since 2004, we have had over 900 people come through our residential drug recovery homes so I can only imagine the need that could be filled in the community if others, like the faith communities in [the article], followed our lead," comments Aguilar.
Aguilar goes on to say that churches are in a particularly prime position to offer addiction recovery, because they are rooted in faith. "There is really no 'secret' to the success rate of the men and women who remain drug free after participating in our program, other than offering them Jesus Christ, which programs like Alcoholics Anonymous do not," he comments.
The has a number of drug recovery homes, some aimed at women and other at men. Those who check into these homes not only receive medically sound techniques for addiction recovery, but they also take part in Bible studies and develop key life skills.
In addition to offering addiction recovery programs, many of these church congregations are also taking the important step of instructing clergy members how best to minister to those struggling with different forms of addiction.
