Philadelphia Gay News Garners 10 Awards From Local Media Association

Ranks Among Top Weekly U.S. Newspapers

(firmenpresse) - PHILADELPHIA, PA -- (Marketwire) -- 04/03/12 -- Philadelphia Gay News (PGN) earned 10 awards last week from the Local Media Association, which serves over 2,000 member North American newspapers. This represents not only the largest number of awards ever given to a publication serving the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community by a mainstream journalism organization, but also ranks PGN as one of the top newspapers in the nation.

Now in its 36th year, Philadelphia Gay News received the second-highest number of awards for weekly newspapers for its circulation category. The Local Media Association (previously Suburban Newspapers of America) has recognized PGN with awards in earlier years; however, this is the largest number that any LGBT newspaper has ever received in one year. With this year's recognition, PGN is the most award-winning LGBT newspaper in the country, and in LGBT media history.

This year, PGN won the following LMA awards:

1st Place, Best Continuing Coverage: Coverage of Stacey Blahnik murder

1st Place, Best Entertainment/Lifestyle Section: Arts & Culture Section

1st Place, Best Column Writing: Millennial Poz

1st Place, Best Graphic Artwork: Election 11/10, Regional Civil Unions/Marriage Laws, 35 Years of PGN timeline

1st Place, Best Non-Page One Layout: Arts & Culture Feature Story Covers

3rd Place, Best Opinion Column: "Mark My Words" (which has also earned awards from The National Newspaper Association, Pennsylvania Newspaper Association and The Society of Professional Journalists. "Mark My Words" is now considered the most honored opinion column in LGBT media.)

3rd Place, Best Arts & Entertainment Criticism/Commentary: These Women Want To Rock You With New Music
